The relationship between Nutrition and healthy living Nutrition plays a vital role in healthy living. Nutrition refers to the science of how the body uses food and its impact on health. Different foods contain the different nutrient profiles, and each nutrient performs a unique function in the body to help keep it functioning properly. Lack of or insufficient intakes of some nutrients have resulted in ill health in some individuals. You are what you eat. These substances perform unique functions in the body to keep it healthy. Nutrients are classified into macro and micro nutrients. Macro nutrients are nutrients required by the body in large amounts, while micronutrients are required in very minute quantities. Examples of macro nutrients are Fats, carbohydrates, protein, and alcohol. Examples of micronutrients are minerals such as Iron, iodine, zinc, calcium and vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B3, folic acid, C, E, D.
